To me it looks like the ball melted.

With the word “dab” I’d also go with Brylcream. It’s a product for holding hair in place. I think the secret ingredient was grease. This is from the fifties.

For our gocomics buddies in other countries, Nate is throwing the illegal “spitball,” in which the pitcher slightly wets one side of the baseball, causing it to move erratically and unpredictably toward the batter. As usual, Nate doesn’t grasp the meaning of the word “slightly.” (As to what was in the tube, I have no idea.)

I remember watching a game where the umps went out to the mound twice to check Gaylord Perry for foreign substances and didn’t find anything. Supposedly he put vaseline on his zipper because they never checked there.

It was also in common use in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Men’s hair was generally shorter and the use of hairspray was considered too “girly”.
