Cleats by Bill Hinds for November 18, 2008
Transcript:
Jack: Who do you think is going to win the national championship? Mondo: What national championship? Jack: College football, of course. Mondo: Don't know, don't care. Jack: How can you not care? Mondo: I hear college is REAL expensive. Jack: Not the games! They're on TV.

I’ve been told that this strip doesn’t make sense. My first instinct is to hire a cop to stand here and direct traffic away, “Nothing to see here. Move along.” But perhaps I’ll just tell you what I had in mind. Some people are into college football, and some aren’t. The idea I was going for here is, college football has nothing to do with college. Mondo presumes there must be a connection, but Jack thinks of college football as another pro league. The humor is supposed to be derived from them not being on the same page. “Move along, please”

I agree. I’m going to have to blame Bill Hinds as well.

bleeep, I thought it was a grim commentary on the likelihood of most children in this country getting to attend four-year universities, their only access to higher education being televised football.
No wonder my friends say my humor is so black ;-)
ETA - Interesting the GOCOMICS thinks D A R N is an expletive worth bleeping. Wow.

It could be taken either way. Mondo’s remark is appropriate in that so many people are being priced out of college. Current tuition where I went to college has outpaced inflation by 350%.

Bill Hinds is cool. It’s nice to see someone who doesn’t take himself too seriously…and in a funny way. I read this strip every day now.

Whereas I was just assuming it had something to do with a general apathy towards higher education among males. (Seriously…if my cousin’s 13-year has his feelings on books being boring echoed by his father one more time, the big one’s getting sacked.)

Wow! That’s the first time I’ve seen the author come out and be candid about his strip. Very commendable and forthright, whatever one’s opinion is about the strip itself.
I may start following it again, even though the obsession with sports is kind of a turnoff for me…
