From the style of the helmets, this could be as late as 1939 – which was about the time when college football teams began to include helmets as a regular piece of the football uniform. Helmets did not become an essential part of the football uniform for the NFL until 1943. The original helmets began to be developed around 1915 – but it did not become commonplace for football players to wear the helmets until around 1939, when they began to be accepted for college play. Since padded gear to protect the private parts were introduced as part of the average football uniform as early as 1888 – but helmets did not become commonplace until the late 30s, the average woman’s joke is that it is so very amazing that it only took men fifty years to discover that the brain was ALSO important. By contrast, helmets did not become commonplace for HOCKEY uniforms until the the late 70s – proving that it only took Hockey players Ninety Years to discover that the brain was ALSO important! Plastic helmets began to be used by about 1940 – so the helmets which Jeff and Mutt are using seem to pre-date the plastic helmets.
Starman’s post is correct. I think panel two should have been translated as “A pig’s outside,” rather than “the outside of a pig.” The double meaning would have made it work better.
Thanks for that bit o’info on when helmets were introduced in the NFL and NHL. You didn’t say when they were introduced in the MLB. Will have to GOOGLE it and report back.

I remember seeing this when it was originally published. In panel two, Mutt’s reply is, “The pig’s outside.”
Also, as I remember it, in p1Mutt said, “Hide.”
