I only did something like this once (way back in my Zenith days). I was hired by the head of their construction department (but he and one other had exec offices, so I was given a desk in the “Facilities” department and it had a minor head (who only got the job because his mom was a well-love secretary of the department) and everyone knew it. He thought the other white GUYS in his department were his “pals” and they allowed that delusion when he was in the room. There was a Philippine guy and me (a woman) who he tried to give a hard time. Within my first days there, he declared in front of the rest “women don’t belong in engineering; I’ll get rid of you one way or another”.

For the most part, I just continued to do my work and tried not to have anything to do with him and I often worked in one of the other sites supervising a project or taking measurements and data. Our Elk Grove Plant had NO construction drawings for the building and interior walls were all constructed in 5’ modules (with few variations). I spent my free time sketching and correcting the entire building drawing so that it could be used for future work and when I had a finished project, I forwarded 2 copies for the use of the maintenance manager of that building. RIGHT?

Not so simple! All company correspondence traveled from IN and OUT boxes (and the one in our office department was . . . . on the corner of HIS desk!

I placed the envelope in that out box and he noticed it there. And said “Who put this here?” and I told him that it was just record drawings for use by staff at Plant 29. “You didn’t ask my permission!” (pouty). And then I said “Well, MAY I, . . . . Mother?” because it seemed like childish games.

He did not speak to me in over a week.

Quick, Rita. Tell someone that thought before it dies of loneliness.

Jay is like the rest of us. He knows better. He knows what will happen if he opens his mouth around Rita. …. And just like the rest of us…. he goes ahead and opens that mouth, the words spill out and …. .. .. this happens.
