AnnMarie: Illuminated manuscripts were basically medieval. When moveable type printing came in, there was space left for hand illuminated initial letters, but the cost ran it off the market. Very little could be found in the 17th century, much less the l8th.

And copy centers already existed by the early Roman Empire—to produce multiple copies for books being published.
