I just learned tonight that this phenomenon is called “semantic satiation”. Here’s the wiki page on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semantic_satiation.
I love oatmeal—especially the steel cut kind. Mix in some craisins and top with fresh blueberries, and there’s not a better way to start the day (except bacon, of course, but unfortunately I can’t eat it very often).
I’ll add my thanks to Simpsonfan. How do you DO that??
For obligatory Grandma tale, when the grandson was put on the two-ended swing set after a hiatus because of illness, he went back and forth, saying “Remine, remore!. Remine, remore!” over and over in time to his swinging. I never heard this expression again, so he must have killed it.

I’m eating oatmeal as I read this strip! Or at least I think I am. What is this stuff, does it have a name? ALICE!

They’ll just find another name for it, Dill. You need to send thesubstance into oblivion too.

“Oatmeal” is still a real thing. So saying it a million times, to make it no longer a word won’t help.
