I think I am often accused of “not listening” simply because I do not remember something said. I may listen attentively but then intellectually discard what I heard, as not relevant to my immediate needs. We all – daily – make hundreds of such judgments to “discard,” to avoid sensory overload.
Sometimes I am mistaken in the judgment to discard. In a world where Alzheimers has a horrifying stigma, even simple, routine, intentional memory loss is too horrible to contemplate. Thus we are accused of bad manners when the real problem is nothing more than sensory overload.
When the hubby is talking about cars. Get him together with another car guy and they can go on for hours. Otherwise my tune out time is between 10pm & 12am after everyone is asleep.
when the terrior is snoring, the cats are purring and I am sitting – with a really good book and a hot cup of tea – in a hot, lovely fully bubbly bath….me time!
Speaking of good football games, ’Bama and Texas A &M was awesome in the first half, now it looks like a “wash” unless something happened since I stopped watching.

If I hadn’t tuned out years ago… would I be spending so much time on GoComics?

I tune out during football games, classic movies and when ever I’m recording music.
