Peppermint Patty sits in front of her house. Charlie Brown stands on the ground. Peppermint Patty says, "I have a problem, Chuck . . . I keep falling asleep in school . . ."<BR><BR> Peppermint Patty continues, "My dad has this night job, see, and he doesn't get home until two in the morning . . ."<BR><BR> Peppermint Patty explains, "I'm afraid to go to sleep while I'm alone in the house so I've been sitting up watching tv . . ."<BR><BR> Peppermint Patty and Charlie Brown sit in the grass. Snoopy marches by and wears a security hat. He carries a flashlight and a rifle. Charlie Brown says, "You need someone to stay with you . . ." Snoopy thinks, "How about a watch-beagle?"<BR><BR>

On the surface, this arc is slapstick comedy with a waterbed… in the essence, a bleak story of motherless childhood.
