As far as I can understand US politics from here, a bill passed by a majority of the Congress, given legitimacy by a presidential election where the incumbent was re-elected, can be abrogated by a minority of the opposition just because they want to hold on to their money! Nice example for us, the ‘largest’ democracy, from the ‘greatest’ democracy. And you presume to judge!

    435 against 101 is not a minority

Actually, the Constitution came under fire almost immediately (1791, or there abouts), remember that the framers were not in perfect agreement. But the real damage began just over one hundred years ago. We are already living in post-Constitutional America. All three branches of government, both political parties and an indifferent electorate are responsible.

The major difference between the Democrats and Republicans is which end of the Bill of Rights they want to put in the shredder first.

Leftists believe the Constitution is “living and breathing.” Conservatives believe the Constitution is the immutable rock on which our freedom is built. There is a difference.

The Declaration was never in doubt, it is the Constitution That is being ignored

At least it was found. Too bad at where it was found. But three cheers for the Red, White and Blue!

I read all the responses above – and the basic argument seems to be – majority does not matter. However you may cloak it in legalese, the conservative attitude is, even if it is a minority on our side, we still want our way – because we shout the loudest and are the most abusive!

Please do understand I do not like Obama, because I have found Republican presidents to be more understanding of India and the corresponding Pakistani duplicity. That is not the matter here however – it is just that I can’t understand the ‘my way only’ attitude that conservatives in US and in India take.

Actually, fbjsr, the President proposes a budget. Congress passes it.
