I heard talk that McKillor's gang's riding in from Yuma! We gotta get outta town before they ID me as a phony! We'd better get some horses! Horses? I don't know how to ride a horse!... There must be some other old timey means of transpor-... I know! Bicycles! We can ride bicycles! Hey, Doc... Happen to notice if they had any training wheels at the place where we got th' bikes?

Really? Bicycles? And for those who don’t know, these are penny farthings. The big wheel represents the large penny coin and the small wheel the farthing coin which was much smaller. Old British currency. My dad used to ride on in parades. He wore tails and a top hat.

No no, those are unicycles with a training wheel.

Once you get going on one of these (if you get going), a bump or fast stop will pitch you over the front.

I notice Monty is practicing the side stroke.
And Doc is using his super-powers to hold tight, so the Earth can’t rotate.

Give it up, Monty, and face your doom at the quick gunhand of the real McKillor like a man. I’ve heard of the short-lived Pony Express, but never the Penny Farthing Express. There is no escape! —Unless that transpositor has finally dried out….

The original name was the “Ordinary” bicycle. And the one we ride today was originally called the “Safety” bicycle. Now I can see why!

Has anyone here ever tried riding a Penny-farthing? I never had the opportunity (only got a real bicycle in 3rd grade – art prize).
