    Well, she could use the money to pay for riding lessons, plus leasing or half-leasing a horse. that way she could learn about how to care for a horse properly, leaving the actual ownership to someone who knows how. Then, after several months of that, she will know if horse ownership is something she really wants to get into. And that way, if she does lose interest, she doesn’t have to try (and maybe fail) to find a home for her unwanted horse.

    Because horses weren’t (just) pets back then but a livelihood. No horse? No getting into town or doing your farm work.
