How about a mask that just has a periscope for one eye so you can see above and below the water at the same time and a tiny mirror to look behind you. It would be a hemiperi-semiretrosnorkel.
Back in the late ‘50s, someone actually made a mask with an attached ’scope. I remember seeing TV ads for it.. Couldn’t have worked very well, Only lasted one summer.
well , you can see more when you are above water, to be sure. But unless you’re submerged, you can’t sneak up on unsuspecting enemy ships and torpedo them
All I ever wore was a mask with snorkel. Now-a-days I mostly swim with my face out of the water. When sharing with family I either swim on bottom with mask or get out and watch (they swim in sun so I’m not in for long anyway). I start to swim at dusk by myself.

the downside to that contraption is you won’t be able to see the pretty fishes and coral and what-not on the sea floor

Awww!… But it takes all the fun out of the “mysterious”, “you can’t see me, but I can see you!” look!…

I don’t understand why it is called a perisnorkel. Should be a perimask.
