Even dogs DO learn to understand the key-words that matter to them. They never learn as many as a smart parrot, however. Cuddles could construct short sentences. She also, though, would only “learn” what she found useful. Never EVER said Happy Birthday or Merry Christmas ;-(
I imagine even Tippy could have learned more if I were intent on teaching her. I taught her to do the things that I needed for her help in feeding and otherwise doing whatever might not be done for her because she had become HIS dog when his daughters lost interest (they were about ages of Holly and Alix in Stone Soup at the time).
