Fun Fact I: The fedora originally WAS a woman’s hat, albeit of a deliberately androgynous sort. It was made famous by the actress Sarah Bernhardt, who wore one in the 1889 play Fédora, and was a popular symbol of the women’s rights movement. The first notable man to sport one was Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII, still later Duke of Windsor) in 1924.

Fun Fact II: The similar-looking Trilby hat also took its name from a stage play (Trilby, of course). Like “Fedora,” “Trilby” was the name of the female lead.
