My cats usually move then get on my lap and then, when I get up, they happily curl up on the spot I so generously warmed and left my scent on for them.

Sounds like we have the same cats, Kim. Mine have taken to sleeping in the laundry basket.

We have one fat calico who has started sleeping in our bread basket (which I left on the kitchen counter by mistake). She barely fits. Needless to say we do not plan to use it for bread…

When I want to sit in my chair but one of the kitties is there, I pick her up, put her on my lap, cuddle and pet her for a minute or so, then set her on the floor. I don’t think they mind being booted from the chair so much if you at least cuddle them a bit first.

That wasn’t a retreat, the Cat got tossed out on its can.

I have one old cat that prefers to sleep on my recliner. When I find him on my seat I tell him, in cat (mrreeow, mwowwr) to let me sit. We usually have a short conversation, 3-5 meows each, before he climbs either onto the arm of the chair or to the footrest if it happens to have been left up. I then sit down and he settles in between my calves.My wife just rolls her eyes at me but the cat and I understand each other just fine.

If I want to sit on a chair that my cat is on, I either carefully move him or I nudge him enough so that I can sit with him behind me.
