We were very poor when I was Michael’s age. Could not afford jam, I guess, but we had bread, butter and sugar, so my mother would spread some butter on the bread, sprinkle it with sugar and give some to my brother and me. We loved it. It was a sweet treat. There was no mess like in this strip.
