My parents came home to our third floor apartment after a New Year party (I was 14 or 15, and babysitting my little sister) to discover firemen poking holes everywhere in the ceiling, and ripping it out in the bathroom to look for, and drain, water from melting ice that had busted through the second floor ceiling, It had broken through their living room ceiling over the carpet. At least most of ours was over the tub.
I remember deciding to clean out the fireplace when I was about 6. The problem is, there were still embers in it. And I was using a paper bag that I thought had garbage in it. Only it wasn’t garbage, it was my mother’s oil paints.
Miraculously, only some of the paint tubes were damaged.
My adventure happened when I was an old pre-teen or a young teen. I was home alone and supposed to check on the little bathroom portable kerosene heater. I was lying on the floor reading, and finally noticed little black specks floating in and out of my vision. Mom came home and found kerosene smoke all over the house. The curtains, walls, etc., were gray. At least our bedroom door was closed. The scene fades . . .
I am not “Ellie bashing” but, she seems quite calm after this incident compared to when Lizzie just spilled milk on the counter and it ran down to the floor. Just saying……
And now Michael is going to get in trouble for lighting the cigar that was left out by the parents. I wonder if John and Elly are going to take ANY responsibility for this.
Kid sisters are SUCH a pain!!!!! I once bribed mine to keep her big trap shut about something, cost me 50 cents, too The little cretin not only squealed on me, but refused to give me back my 50 cents!
I did that very thing when I was about 13 and carried it out of the house to the driveway. The heat from the fire rises and very little radiates horizontal to the can.
My kids were all in their teens when I first left them alone for a while evenings (while out with my friend). There WERE a couple of incidents where I came home to rather wild parties and I had to more firmly lay down the rules, but it was not easy being just a little 5’ gal with 4 big teens (their dad was 5-11 and they all are taller than I by far).
I’m glad they’re all grown with their own kids now.

At least Ellie has a (sleepy) smile on her face after that ordeal!Looks like another year just like last year, but Ellie is starting it off right.

She won’t have hurt her hands. She will be like Wile E. Coyote. He never got hurt after falling off of a cliff. Cartoon magic.

Tell Michael to run it under the faucet next time to be sure it’s out.
