Frazz by Jef Mallett for February 06, 2014
Transcript:
Caulfield: Today is exactly six weeks from the vernal equinox. Frazz: Hmm. Caulfield: As opposed to Sunday. You know, the day the people in charge put Groundhog Day. Frazz: For a kid who claims not to like math ... Caulfield: I like it fine when it helps me question authority.

I’m pretty “mathy” ..well, make that “arithmetical” …. but huh?
Whether or not the groundhog sees his shadow, the 6 more weeks of “winter” he sometimes predicts is wintery weather … not the (incorrect) date for the solstice.
Weather seasons don’t follow that calendar anyway.
Yeah, the solstice is 6 weeks and 4 days after Groundhog Day…. Caulfield probably wouldn’t know (but maybe he does!) it’s because they’re remnants of separate holidays on two different ancient calendars.

Is that math or science? I’d say science because math is part of science…

Candelmas though is the midway point between the Solstice and the equinox—13 weeks isn’t divisible evenly by 2

Well, they were off by a few days. Who cares? It’s in the 40’s here in the Old Dominion. Pretty soon it will be sunny and in the 50’s and I will be able to go out and run again instead of using the Y’s treadmills!

Personally, all I know about math is that 2 + 2 = 22.
