Why is the character of Ted seen as a villain? Have we learned of an abusive relationship between Ted and Chelle’s mom before this incident of Chelle decking her?
I remember when I was a boy more than 60 years ago, “Karen” in our neighborhood was a BIG girl/woman (about 20-21 years old and 175 pounds) whose only costume seemed to be men’s denim jeans and men’s plaid flannel shirts. When I asked my folks about Karen’s clothing style, my mom said, “Oh, I heard she works in a warehouse and those are her work clothes.”
Back then, folks just didn’t speculate about orientation or even actual gender the way folks do today. Today we are familiar enough with the character of “Pat” played by Julia Sweeney to use it as a reference point. My mom was in her 80s when Julia Sweeney and her character Pat were on TV. Mom never saw ANY ambiguity in the character – and would ask me why the audience laughed at a chubby woman who dressed in men’s clothes. When I explained the audience was laughing because Pat’s coworkers weren’t sure if she was male or female, Mom said, “That’s just silly. Anyone can see she’s female.”
