I’ve heard some people complain that the “Y2K danger” was nothing but a big scam because nothing bad happened in spite of all the hoopla. But all that hoopla was why nothing happened. Alerted by the “hoopla”, thousands of computer programmers (including myself) around the world scanned millions of lines of code, often in languages they hadn’t used in decades, to ferret out potential problems and eliminate them. Fortunately, we programmers in my department frequently modified our programs and so knew exactly what needed to rewritten to be Y2K compliant, and all the modifications took less than a week.
My brother had a neighbor that was going to get a tanker of gas (big rig driver) and burry it on his property. He actually went so far as to spend the summer excavating a hole to put it in.
