I have been to Russia. The hotel was very nice and modern. Some of the people living there did not have running water and had to get their water from road side spigots. I am sure if you stayed at a cheaper hotel you would not be better off than the locals. That being said I have stayed at 13 dollar a night hotels in the US that had messed up plumbing and nasty rooms. The nice hotels in Russia beat the cheap hotels in the US.
The opening ceremonies were most impressive. The games have begun and seem to be working well. An element in America do not want the games to succeed, much as an element do not want health care reform to succeed. The losers are a large portion of the American media whom cannot be trusted for honest and balanced reporting, and the American people who are deprived of reliable information and have devolved into ideological mud-wrestling.
