Once you go to the light side (the metric system), you never again have to worry about which is heavier, an ounce of feathers, or an ounce of gold. All the difficulty was in the metric conversions between systems.
Virginia tried “bilingual” signs, with miles and kilometers. Didn’t go over well. The best reason I could see was from a writer of a letter to the editor, who said that there are only three types of people interested in the metric system (and therefore there was no good reason to pursue it):1: Scientists who think that they look smarter when they use metric measures2: People who think Europeans are better than Americans3: Communists
Considering the writer’s logic, it’s no wonder we squashed that idea before it could take root. I feel safer now.
As silly as it might sound, Sweden did just that (although they did it all on the same day at the same time for all vehicles). They went from driving on the left to driving on the right. The Volvo club newsletter (and I’m sure other sources) published an aerial photo at the time (I think it was noon) that it was carried out; at this time, traffic pattern was basically an X. I don’t know why they decided to make the change….but they did.
