Arlo and Janis by Jimmy Johnson for March 12, 2014
Transcript:
Meg: Skeeter, duh! No restaurant, no leftovers! No matter where our family lives! Skeeter: Oh, yeh! Skeeter: Well, I hope you don't have to move anyway! Meg: Thanks! Me, too! Meg: Hey! There's etouffee in the fridge! Skeeter: Let's go out in a blaze of glory! Skeeter: That's what my old man says on Friday night? Meg: What happens then? Skeeter: Well, it's not a blaze of glory!

Did the aliens pick Meg up and bring back a couple years later?

In yesterday’s classic A&J, JJ explanied his comics for last week about Arlo’s hair. Maybe soon he’ll explain where this week’s theme came from.

Now we know why we hadn’t heard from the kids in a while. They were aging. But don’t comic kids age much slower than the rest of us, if at all?

OK… left home on her own… and the friend comes over… “let’s eat!” means warming up a etoufee…presumably at the kitchen stove… likely a gas range… and “going out in a BLASE of glory” pops up in conversation… TWICE… can anyone say “FORESHADOWING”?

Etoufee is the fridge? Sounds like this is set on the Gulf Coast, maybe Louisiana? Anyway, Skeeter isn’t exactly the brightest character on the comics page, is he?

On June 13, 1997, Mary Lou appears in the strip pregnant. That makes Meg about 16 years old, which is pretty well in line with the current image. She actually looks a little younger. Kids can and do age dramatically over a short time in their mid teens.

Skeeter seems to look like Gus. Maybe a nephew, or just how Jimmy draws some people?

…why do people assume kids are unable to take care of themselves for a few hours? We did it all the time when we were young…

This could be how Meg perceives herself — since she’s on her own so much, she may assume she’s an “adult” so that’s how she’s drawn now.

Hollywood & company deserve a lot of “glorious” blame for all the stuff they make.

I don’t worry too much about how comic characters age.
How old is Blondie Bumstead? She has aged well.
