    I’m guessing this is a “lady’s” joke?

Yes and no to the joke. Some of the more expensive brands out there prey on a woman’s vanity. Every designer has a different view on what is a size 10. If I shop at the local big box store I have to sometimes go into the Plus size area to get an 18 but if I go to a local high end store I’m a 14. Unfortunately women’s sizes aren’t based off a tape measure like men’s clothing. The only time I’ve found that this is different is with wedding dresses. My sister is dress shopping and she’s a size 5 but most of the wedding dresses she’s tried on are 10s. It’s nuts, and men wonder why it takes a women so long to clothe shop.

I (NOT a lady) ordered some jeans from a California company called Hollister….what they say are 30 inch waist size , measured out precisely is a 34….but,curiously, their shirt sizes are the other way around .. medium is small, large is medium, etc

And watch out for those clothes that have a little bit of “stretch” in them. They make you look like a stuffed sausage. And you need to go 2 sizes up to look good.

It’s called “vanity sizing,” and as someone who likes to shop online, I hate it, means I have to make more returns. I used to just say, “why can’t they just mark women’s clothes with actual measurement numbers like men’s clothing?” But it turns out they flatter the guys too:

I have notes for ordering on-line. If I buy from company A, it’s size 14, company B is 8, company C is 12. This was from trial and error (and lots of returns). It’s ridiculous…

I’ve always made my own clothes. Every now and then I look at clothes online or in a store, and can’t believe the shoddy quality and the prices.
