Here’s some trivia: Penny’s name has gone through several changes over the years. A long time ago I named her Steamboat Sally (because I was listening to a lot of old W.C. Fields radio shows and was in a weird mindset).But writing out “Steamboat Sally” every time is, at best, tedious, and it became shortened to Sally. Unfortunately, there are too many prominent Sallys in the comics pages, so before launching it here I asked my wife to rename her. We now have Penny.This particular strip is based on an ex-girlfriend. She would always make this Joker-like smile when asking if there was anything in her teeth and this never ceases to crack me up.
