Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for May 10, 2014
Transcript:
Phoebe: Do unicorns have good eyesight? Marigold: It depends how one measures. We do not see farther... but we see MAGIC COLORS you cannot. The songs of spring songbirds are a color called "blurple." Phoebe: That's a gross name for a color. Marigold: It is a gross color. You are lucky you cannot see it.

Reminds me of the C&H conversation where Hobbes tells Calvin animals have different words describe smells. Wet leaves smell snipped whereas as Calvin smells (in a joking manner) terrible.

Blurple looks somewhat like octarine, only dirtier.
spottycat almost 11 years ago
Exactly! Octarine is a pure magic color. Blurple is a color of mere non-magical feathery creatures.

Bicycle companies do strange colour names. One was “Purpleen” (purple from one angle, green from another). I had my wife in hysterics telling her (with Irish accent) about my daughter Purpleen, and singing “I’ll Take You Home Again, Purpleen”.

What about heliotrope? Is that a real color?
nerdhoof almost 11 years ago
Heliotrope is a type of flower, or the color of that flower.

Blurple = Blue + Purple…And all this time, I’ve been calling it “Indigo”. I rather like Indigo.

“Blurple” is commonly used by nailpolish enthusiasts to describe blue polish with purple undertones.
