I think it’s you don’t salute uless you are wearing a uniform(military, scouts etc.). Other then that you are supposed to put your hand over your heart as a sign of respect.
Surprisingly, the salute above is pretty much correct. Arm, from shoulder to elbow, level to the ground, and fingertips right at the edge of the eyebrows. Boyce must have some military training.

it is actually permissible for active military and former military veterans to salute out of uniform.
