Aren’t the handles for grasping the shield positioned wrongly? Looka like when he brings it in front of him, it’ll be horizontal, wheilst it should be vertical….

A modestly enlarged image can be found at the only work, by this artist, so far, to appear in Mr. Melcher’s blog (yesterday). A slightly-different-coloration, click-to-enlarge image can be found here. The caption to this The Boy’s King Arthur illustration readsI am Sir Launcelot du Lac,King Ban’s son of Benwick, and knight of the RoundTable(links point to Wikipedia pages). Another different coloration image can be found here (title currently incorrectly credits Andrew Wyeth, text has it correct), along with other illustrations in the book. The artist’s Wikipedia page and collection (more under Subcategories).

Just looked at the credit. Wyeth was a prolific illustrator and did a lot of adventure story illustrations.

In some styles, the shape of the shield and the positioning of the handles allowed for the pointed end to be used as an offensive weapon. There were many different styles made, each specified by the owner for his own particular fighting style and tastes.
