I opened a cupboard at work once, and there were a bunch of mice inside. They just sat there looking at me, it was then I figured it was time to get rid of the mice.
And they learn quickly to expect food that is put out regularly, so they will come to remind you if you forget (sometimes even knocking on the windows). Or they might just wave like this:
