I briefly heard about a study (I’ve got to look this up) that indicated that if the world’s population lived in the density of New York city they could all live in Idaho, Kansas, and Louisiana. Seems we have Lots of room!
Stand on Zanzibar is an excellent, thoughtful, depressing novel by John Brunner about what overpopulation will be like. Here’s one of many reviews https://www.sfsite.com/04b/sz79.htm
Actually, the novel is frightening accurate in the picture of how people react to overcrowding. Example, the random acts of explosive violence where someone goes nuts and starts killing people. Seems to me that’s in the news all too often. Also though, remember that a novel is different from an essay. Brunner is not making predictions but creating a very horrible atmosphere.

I’m surprised that he got the plasma blade past the censors.

We’re already past 7 billion. What would determine the “maximum”?

And in the 70’s, there was a book that postulated that, shoulder to shoulder, the world’s population could “Stand on Zanzibar”. But who would want to?
