The Boondocks by Aaron McGruder for November 26, 2021
Transcript:
Sarah (on phone): Listen carefully. I'm white. My husband is black. My daughter is neither. Understood? Principal: Yes, ma'am. Sarah: It's up to Jazmine to construct her own identity. We don't want anyone doing it for her. Is that clear? Principal: Perfectly. I agree one hundred percent. Sarah: If she must be called anything, use the term "multiracial." Never "white," never "black", ok? Principal: Never "black." Got it. Could you hold for just a second? She's black.

No, she’s biracial. Can we please move on from this principal now

To me it feels kinda harmful for Tom and Sara to tell Jazmine that she’s “neither”.

She isn’t a black. She’s a little girl, and should only be judged on her personality and her interests.

The measure of a man is by his actions, not his background.

“The one-drop rule has long been taken for granted throughout the United States by whites and blacks alike, and the federal courts have taken “judicial notice” of it as being a matter of common knowledge. State courts have generally upheld the one-drop rule, but some have limited the definition to one thirty-second or one-sixteenth or one-eighth black ancestry, or made other limited exceptions for persons with both Indian and black ancestry. Most Americans seem unaware that this definition of blacks is extremely unusual in other countries, perhaps even unique to the United States, and that Americans define no other minority group in a similar way"https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/jefferson/mixed/onedrop.html

The principal has no principles.

How timely. But today the teacher will tell Jazmine that her mother is a racist.

The one drop rule strikes again. Interesting that so many whites and blacks agree with it.
