Must be the garbage man. If Poncho had emotionally bonded to the garbage itself, he’d likely hate the garbage man for stealing it. Poncho loves garbage in the abstract, but his “crush” on the garbage man (which I think has been established in an earlier strip) is one of association, like an avid reader might fall in love with a librarian.
Oh, and I assume that the garbage pick-up is Monday morning, since Poncho is already apologizing for having missed it.
.
Wow, thinking through the comments has ruined the perfect depiction of Dog romance with DROPPED garbage from sloppy can handling. He loves the valentines left every time the G-man messes up.
Naw, I still maintain that, as Poncho’s hatred of the mailman has led to an abhorrance of all things related to mail and the postal service (Poncho once had to apologize to the Gang for merely opening a piece of junk mail that was addressed in his name), so has his love of garbage turned into a bromantic attachment to the garbage man.
Poncho in the first panel looks like a real “mad” dog. O__O
“SWEET MERCIFUL BUSCUITS!” Hm. Interesting phrase of surprise. This will have to go after Superman’s “Great Scott!” and Charlie Brown’s “Good grief” in my book.

Uhhh… I wouldn’t put money on that if I were you, particularly as you’re including Carmen.
Unless you mean “You love Chazz and Carmen more than the garbage man loves Chazz and Carmen”, in which case… Nope, I’m still not convinced.
And stop calling him “Shirley.”
