Actually, it’s the mom-in that can’t hear a thing. Doesn’t keep from talking, though.

If she is a ‘typical’ mom-in-law, she doesn’t notice her son-in-law anyway. Most ‘m-i-ls’ think ‘s-i-ls’ are non-entities anyway.
