Nora: My mom says being too smart can annoy people. Gracie: Actually, I hope more people think being smart is annoying. Gracie: I'll have less competition when I apply to college.
The thing is, she never seems happy with learning things for their own sake. It’s always part of a narrative in which she’s talking about how she’s different (and, it is implied, better) than other kids.
Here’s the difference:
Kid One: Wow! Did you know that gravity is what holds planets in an orbit? And that you can use math to predict how those orbits will decay? It’s so cool!
Kid Two: I really like reading about gravity, unlike all those other kids. It’s going to help me get into college.
