Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for September 18, 2014
Transcript:
Mom: "I'm home" Dad: "How was your meeting with Calvin's teacher?" Mom: "Well, when we got to the classroom, we saw that all the kids had drawn self-portraits in art class, and had left the pictures on their desks so the parents would recognize their child's seat" Dad: "That's a cute idea. Did you find Calvin's picture?" Mom: "There was one drawing of a green kid with fangs. Six eyes, and his finger up his nose" Dad: "Uh oh" Mom: "The meeting went downhill from there"

If I were Calvin’s mom, I would think his self portrait is hilarious and I would defend his creativity to Miss Wormwood. Of course if I were Calvin’s mom, I would also be on top of his homework and make sure he understands what he is supposed to do, sitting with him if necessary in order to complete it. I wouldn’t just leave it all up to him.

A self-portrait. How cute!

Of course it’s much more entertaining the way it is, with Hobbes helping Calvin with his homework!

parent teacher meeting, do they still have those? and, there wasn’t a security officer making sure nothing went out of hand, no altercations between adults? nothing about test scores and common core discussions?

@uniquename: Yes, attacking the schools without getting involved is like attacking the government without getting involved. We elect government leaders and we elect the school board. So, if we are simply cynical non-participants, there is a sense in which we are attacking ourselves for our own non-involvement.

Calvin’s self-portrait sounds like one of the aliens in his Spaceman Spiff adventures. Maybe he misunderstood the assignment – he never really pays attention anyway – to what Mrs Wormwood is saying.

Yeah, that’s him!

And on the bottom of the picture was a note from the teacher: “See me!”

Down hill perhaps but not if it were Stephen King or George Lucas or Steven Speilberg as a little kid!

Calvin and his pet tiger Hobbes are playing with Uncle Max when Calvin’s dad returns from a meeting with Calvin’s teacher.

I think that’s funnier and cuter.

When I started school, one of the first assignments was to draw and color a picture of our home and yard with trees, grass, etc..The teacher sent home a note along with my “drawing”, wondering why I colored the lawn and trees red instead of green. It turns out I am color blind on reds and greens. Nobody told me trees and grass were green; I thought the red crayon matched what I remembered, so I colored it red…

Years ago, my mom found a picture I had coloured for school. She laughed at the fact that I coloured the carrot purple. It turns out that there are purple carrots, and they have more nutrients that the more popular orange ones.…WHO’S STUPID NOW?

Twenty years down the line, they’ll look back at this moment and say to their son, “Well…, you always did have a creative mind.”

Or Calvin’s mom was blaming Miss Wormwood.

When I was in kindergarten the teacher gave us pictures to color and I got a sheep. I colored it black because I had seen a flock of sheep once with one little black lamb in its midst. I remember feeling so incredibly proud of my coloring job. The next day however when the teacher handed the drawings back, I noticed the coloring had gone outside the lines in many places and I was completely dismayed at what a crappy job I had done. I was so disappointed in myself.

These kids are 6, no parent is going to recognize their kid’s self-portrait. The only difference between them will be what color the stick figure is. Calvin’s mom had an advantage on this one.

My mother would’ve said, “Well, at least he’s creative.”
