We had a tree in the parkway right opposite our front walk that was like Facebook/LinkedIn/Whiteboard etc., etc., for our dogs and everyother dog in a half-mile radius. Several “generations” of our dogs would make a bee-line for it like a teen-ager for a phone, obviously very excited to see what it “said.” One day it fell victim to the Emerald Ash Borer. The village planted another tree a few feet away, but it was like losing their hard drive — all the good messages were gone. Sigh. It will take years….
I don’t recall ever chopping peonies down to the ground once they have finished blooming. Mom’s were bushes, lining the driveway. but no pretty flowers to smell and chat up. bummer.

Poor Koko – I have peonies to cut down soon, and our cats won’t be happy!! They use them as garden umbrellas…..
