    Well, both are skullcaps. This is a zucchetto.

    Wikipedia says: “Its appearance is almost identical to the Jewish kippah (yarmulke), though its significance is quite different.”

    Again: The Pope (and other Catholic Clergy) wear skullcaps called zucchetti (sing. zucchetto). They are similar to yarmulke, but have a little string at the center to aid in handling them. They are intended to be worn under miters and birettas, but not so much on their own, although many do wear them independently of other coverings. At liturgies, they are not worn from the Eucharistic Prayer to Communion (when the Real Presence is present) out of respect for the presence of Christ.

    Yarmulke is a Jewish skullcap, worn by observant (male) Jews, in obedience to the commandment to have one’s head covered when in prayer.
