Al S. said, about 8 hours ago@neverenoughgoldActually, they are called “garage sales” now!…

Only when they’re done in a garage. There are also yard sales, lawn sales, driveway sales, sidewalk sales, house sales, estate sales, moving sales, etc. Rummage sales may be an age thing, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s also a regionalism.

Apparently the word “rummage” had bad connotations…

Have you ever been served a garbage salad?.I think you might be correct when you say “I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s also a regionalism.”However, pretty much every sale outside the home, including yard sales, lawn sales, driveway sales, sidewalk sales, moving sales, etc., are pretty much generalized as “garage sales” here in the Midwest, and frequently occupy the garage, driveway, lawn, sidewalk, and any other place where there is space. I can’t remember the last time I saw a sign for a “rummage sale”…

How come “rummage” (to prowl through a pile of stuff in hopes of finding something useful) sale is bad, but “flea market” is acceptable?
