Technically, the abbreviations should be 12n and 12m. Since digital displays can usually only handle am and pm, the convention has been set to go with the abbreviation that takes effect in one second and applies to the next 12 hours.

I have a hard time trying to keep my husband from overfeeding our Dachshund. He can’t go over fifteen pounds or his back will suffer.
