A $7 watch on a d-clip I got at Wally World lasted longer (4 years) than any other watch I have ever owned. Most watches I’ve had were far more expensive and never made it long enough to require a battery change. It wasn’t even dead when I finally discarded it after I was forced to carry a cell phone at work.
An interesting thing (at least to me): I took my timex to Target to get the battery replaced and they refused to do it. They said they only put new batteries in watches that they sold.
Haven’t worn a watch, or any jewelry, for many years. Worked around machinery too often, bit dangerous. Plus, a watch was a good way to draw an arc from electronics. Cell phones, tablets, pagers, computers, car radio, etc.; we are surrounded by clocks. Does anyone know when “Jerry Springer” is on again?
Until I switched to a pocketwatch (so I’m old-timey) all my watches were actually fairly cheap. I owned one that served me reliably for eight years before it gave up the ghost, and according to my dad who gave it to me, it was only six dollars. Most people I know are the same way with their watches. They aren’t looking for flashy, they’re looking for reasonably priced and reliable.

Because they’re something big and shiny to wear, and have lots of dials and knobs.
