I thought it was those little quarter-circle thingies shown holding the stones on period paintings. Four lashed together on each edge of the block enabled the stone to be rolled rather than dragged – without needing log roller-bearings. And they were hired craftsmen, not driven slave labor.
Ather: No painting shows stones being dragged, rollers or not. Many show stones being finished while resting on a well-chocked quarter-circle. Why would the artists at the scene lie?

I read that the blocks could way about 5,000 lb each, so they wouldn’t have just two guys pushing. Of course, this block would have to be lighter.
