It’s different and original…. not like a costume from a box.She should be proud! How about some positive reinforcement, instead of attempting to stifle his creativity??And maybe even some constructive advice for overcoming problems only a grown-up can foresee…. after all, he’s a kid.
“Michael, that’s so clever. Hey, why don’t we make some openings for your hands, in case you want to eat something?”
“Do you think it should be a little narrower, to fit through doorways? Do you need help with that?”
Actually, I don’t see why he can’t dance or sit in it the way it is.
A friend and I went to a costume party as a pair of dice. We wore cubical boxes which were painted black and used the centers of white paper plates for the spots on the four sides. We wore felt berets as the “one” spot, and had cutout holes one the front to stick our hands out. The “dice” were really cute and clever. We didn’t discover until we got to the party that our hands would not reach our mouths through those holes, so we ditched the boxes for most of the party and hung out in our tights and leotards. Being a LOT younger and pre-children at the time, we both looked pretty good in those leotards…..
I agree with Susan. I helped my kids do their costumes but I went with their ideas. As mine were all about a year apart, they liked doing themes together and we did many. My kids are all creative and have done well in life (even if I don’t agree with all their choices).
I once wanted to do something similar on Halloween, to have me and my friend be a two-headed robot—the trouble is, I didn’t realize that the fact that my friend was about six inches taller than I was was going to be a problem!
If Elly had said nothing, or had simply praised Michael’s creativity, and Michael then had trouble getting through a door or eating, who wants to bet that the Ellyhaters on this site would be grousing about what a lousy parent she was for not noticing the problems with the costume?

So how did Michael get all the other details (like the wires on his head) together on his own?
