When finished, the government got back more than twice the cost in the first year alone in increased income taxes from farmers no longer losing as many cattle to screwworm infestation. They found (and it applied to other species like the Med fly) that males were promiscuous and females monogamous. Sterilize males with gamma radiation and release them. Fecundity rate plummets, and no more sick cattle losses, more farmer income, and so more taxes to pay for “stupid and satanic” science instead of on killing people.
