When Ford was shot at, twice, and Reagan shot, it was no harm no foul to the Secret Service.
This flap is about elections and blaming administrations, and “those in power”, not protocols being followed, or one of the toughest jobs in the world. Providing protection for a structure that is the “public’s house” and nobody wants to see it looking like a potentate’s fortress, IS quite a challenge.
A “dead line” immediately inside the fence would stack some bodies up, but would be bad PR, and the first “crazy” they killed, would be the start of an outcry against an agency out of control and killing good decent Americans(especially if they ARE carrying one of those sainted guns guaranteed every person by the Constitution!).
Worse, he’s in someone else’s house . . . The VP residence has a REAL security perimeter to protect the military hardware collocated there about which I don’t think anyone is supposed to speak.
