There are more natural things to feed them. Bread is not good for the ducks’ digestive system, and if in a closed body of water, contributes greatly to the pond scum.

Before they fly South for the winter, they should be fed Pilot bread. It’s a great cracker.

When I was a child, we used to throw stale bread out for the birds and they were thrilled to pieces. These days, they just scoff if you try that. So many people buy big sacks of bird feed and the spoiled little brat-birds just wait for the good stuff. Bad side-effect, wild bird seed sprouts = weeds in your yard, whether or not it has been through a bird.

Wow! I had no idea there would be so much controversy over feeding bread scraps to birds and other wild animals..Related to this, while staying in the condo along the North Shore of Minnesota, I had a chance to discuss feeding deer food scraps with a Minnesota DNR officer. Although I don’t believe there are any state regulations prohibiting the activity, the officer indicated it is the primary reason for so many deer killed on Hwy 61! Normally, deer would never forage this close to Lake Superior; but, because so many home and cabin owners along the shore put out food for the deer, the animals literally “mark” the locations as sources of food..The end result is they don’t really use their innate foraging skills and end up risking their lives venturing far from their normal feeding areas!..Who’da known…
