Tip of the day: get a degree in something people will actually pay money for you to do!English, history, etc. , are only good if you want to be a teacher!

Some people believe the purpose of work is so that you can live. Some people believe the purpose of life is so you can work.

jnik23260 sounds like the type of person who would think Common Core is a good thing.

One crucially important facet of learning English well is that you get really good at recognizing bullshit when you hear it. Politicians, preachers, etc., all use language to manipulate.

My son got his associate’s degree in web development, but is still looking for a job. They all want years of experience, or to relocate several states away. We thought it would be a marketable skill, but doesn’t seem to be in our area.

@ Al S. – From some of the webpages I’ve seen (and many written by so-called journalists) English majors are greatly needed everywhere! Grammar and spelling are in such short supply and the overuse of “texting language” isn’t helping anyone learn how to communicate properly..Having retired from a career where my writing skills were superior to the degreed and credentialed individuals I worked for, I’d have to say that today’s schools are failing — horribly!

You need to create a website and market yourself, Mr. Spider.

Hey Spider – you can always be a grammar nazi on GoComics. Love all the comments – especially comments by jreckard, gopher gofer and Bruno.

All learning is good for its own sake. It IS amusing that a spider isn’t able to design a web, but no “black widow” that. No female would be caught in those polka-dot shorts.

I have two English Major graduates, both with good jobs, because they’ve learned the lost art of communication and eloquence. I forwarded this cartoon to them because the spider angle is brilliant and because every Tom, Dick and Harry used to feel compelled to weigh in with them on their choice of major.

Wasn’t Major Barbara a successful English Major?
