It’s almost $3 a gallon in our area of Washington state and going up (just in time for Christmas). And as if that’s not enough, our governor wants to create a “carbon tax” based on how many miles you drive…supposedly it would include transponders on every vehicle that tracks not only your mileage, but also where you’ve been and when. Orwell was right; he was just three decades off.
Started when Col. McCormick talked vendors into changing their prices to end in 4 or 9. Newspapers were a penny then, and the vendors could sell more papers. Soon everyone was getting this “bargain”..Years later, gasoline was so cheap that didn’t work, so they changed the perception of consumers by adding the 9/10 cent – gas at 11.9 cents appeared to be a lot cheaper than gas at 12 cents. The rest is history and inertia. I had wondered about that when I was buying gas at 27.9 cents/gal.

Clovia & Slim own a service station. Skeezix still has an interest in it. Why would he buy gasoline at a competing station?

Lots of products are sold with prices einding with 9. It almost makes sense if you think of $2.499 per gallon as $24.99 per 10 gallons.

Historically low prices here in Vancouver BC! Today gas was 1.17point 9/litre – about $4.60/gal.
