Poor Snoopy, I mean The Ace. The war has really taken its toll on him.

Actually, though America entered the war in 1917, they didn’t really start sending troops until early 1918. The armistice was signed on November 11, so many of the troops were home by Christmas.

Though it’s late, the holiday is still going on; so, Happy Hanukkah!

Of course if Snoopy actually were a flying ace during WWI, he wouldn’t refer to himself as a WWI Flying Ace, because WWI wasn’t known by that name until the start of WWII. At the time it was known as The Great War.

I was in the Marines from ‘63-’67 and never was home for Christmas. Didn’t really bother me. The best Christmas was when I was training in Japan. It was very festive.

Snoopy is a World War I Flying Ace. Snoopy flies a Sopwith Camel.

The World War I Flying Ace must be British. English I think.

Nah, the US used castoffs of British or French planes. An American ace flying a Sopwith Camel seems plausible.

Snoopy’s Christmas, by The Royal Guardsmen The news it came out in the First World War,the bloody Red Baron was flying once more. The Allied Command ignored all of its men,and called on Snoopy to do it again. Was the night before Christmas and forty below, when Snoopy went up in search of his foe.He spied the Red Baron and fiercely they fought, with ice on his wings, Snoopy knew he was caught. Christmas bells those Christmas bells, ring out from the land.Asking peace of all the world,And good will to man. The Baron had Snoopy dead in his sights,he reached for the trigger to pull it up tight. Why he didn’t shoot, well, we’ll never know,or was it the bells from the village below. Christmas bells those Christmas bells, ringing through the land.Bringing peace to all the world, and good will to man. The Baron made Snoopy fly to the Rhine, and forced him to land behind the enemy lines.Snoopy was certain that this was the end, when the Baron cried out “Merry Christmas, mein friend!”The Baron then offered a holiday toast, and Snoopy our hero saluted his host. And then, with a roar, they were both on their way, each knowing they’d meet on some other day.

This is the centennial of the amazing Christmas Truce between British and German troops in Belgium. They met in no-man’s land, exchanged small gifts, sang carols and had a football match (that’s soccer to the Yanks).

It’s true, World War I flying aces didn’t drink root beer. They generally drank stuff that was a lot harder, and lots of it, to the point where they were ofter flying with serious hangovers. Apparently they generally had raging headaches anyway from the fumes from the aircraft engines, which were lubricated with castor oil.

I like that Charley Brown understands Snoop’s anguish. A boy and his dog communicate without words.

The two sides (Austria-Hungary and Serbia) that went to war both thought it would be over fast.

But then the two country war ballooned to involve other countries after they called in treaties and favors from other countries, and dragged for 4 years.
