“Sorry to interrupt, Mama,” says the girl, “but what kind of tree was the Giving Tree? A maple, an oak, a fir, a cedar, what?”

I am really looking forward to reading to my great-granddaughter. I need to start looking for some Dr. Seuss books.

Shel Silverstein was a great poet. At 62, I still cannot read “The Giving Tree” without tearing up. I miss him. But, I find solace in his books and his songs.

It is a good thing indeedWhen someone plants a seedAnd to watch and help it growSo someday, it to be a tree.It is a good thing in truthWhen a tree brings forth its fruitOr to shade someone’s headOr its branch be a robins nest.It is good when a tree is usedBy nature, or by me or youTo protect or shelter livesFor a tree; it never dies.A tree is someone’s homeA tree is someone’s good bookA tree is never alone, For to know a tree, all you do; is look.It is good to plant a treeIt is good to plant a seedFor someday it will be grownAnd a tree, will be known.

I always wondered, how are the top ten chosen? Do we vote? Or Gary, do you get feedback, other than these comments? I occasionally cut one out and send it to somebody I think will appreciate it, but how do you know? It’s a mystery! ;^)

There once was a tree then it was cut down and made into this book. The End.
