The most effort my cats ever put into anything is using the litter box, because they choose to cover it up (thankfully). Maybe you could consider chasing the little red dot or batting around anything they find on the floor. One of them earned her keep by finding a lost (expensive) earring years ago. She was batting it around on the kitchen floor. No idea where she found it, but it earned her extra treats. Out of four cats since we retired (two still with us), that’s the only productive thing I can think of, besides cuddles, kisses, love, and snubs.
In the course of four years mine “Presented” me with two very neatly killed Mice. No idea how they got into the House. But when I got home he was sitting up, with the Mouse at his feet, looking so proud of himself that I just HAD to make a big fuss over his “Accomplishment!”
My calico brought in a live chipmunk and a live snake (we had a cat door). Most gifts were left at the outside of the door (chipmunks, birds, frog). Several times she had a chipmunk still alive that she would “play” with (new meaning to playing with your food).

Ed has a cat? In retrospect, a cat is the ideal pet/companion for him.
